Routine Dental Examination
Regular dental exams are an important part of preventive health care. During a dental exam, the dentist will check your teeth and mouth and identify gum inflammation or bone loss. The dentist will evaluate your risk of developing tooth decay and other oral health problems, as well as check your face, neck and mouth for abnormalities. A dental exam might also include dental X-rays or other diagnostic procedures.
During a dental exam, the dentist will likely discuss your diet and oral hygiene habits and might demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques. Other topics for discussion during a dental exam might include:
- Any medications you’re taking
- Use of tobacco products
- Consequences of tooth loss
- Benefits of crowns, fixed bridges or dental implants
- Use of dentures
- Cosmetic procedures
- A dental exam also gives you the opportunity to ask questions about oral health
Root Canal Therapy
Root canal treatment is a dental procedure to treat infection at the centre of a tooth (the root canal system). Root canal treatment is also called endodontics.
The infection is caused by bacteria that live in the mouth and invade the tooth when:
- tooth decay occurs
- fillings leak
- teeth are damaged by trauma, such as a fall
Restorative Dental Treatments
A dental restoration or dental filling is a dental restorative material used to restore the function and integrity of missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically results from caries (dental decay) or external trauma.
Fillings can be composite (white fillings), amalgam (silver fillings), porcelain or gold.
Crowns
A crown is a type of cap that completely covers a real tooth. It’s made from either metal, or porcelain and metal, and is fixed in your mouth. Crowns can be fitted where a tooth has broken, decayed or been damaged, or just to make a tooth look better.
Bridges
A bridge is a fixed replacement for a missing tooth or teeth. It is made by taking an impression of the surrounding teeth, which will eventually support the bridge. A bridge is usually created from precious metal and porcelain and will be fixed in your mouth (unlike dentures, which can be removed).
